Professional profile
MUDr. Radovan Barilla PhD, completed his studies at the Faculty of Medicine in the field of General Medicine in 1992 at P.J. Šafárik University in Košice. He worked at the Štefana Kukura Hospital in Michalovce since 1992. For more than 10 years, he also worked as the head of the regional Oncology Center in Michalovce and at the same time as the Chief Physician of the World Health Hospital network for the field of Oncology.
In 1995, he obtained a basic certification in the field of Internal Medicine and in 1998 a certification in the specialty field of Clinical (Internal) Oncology. In 2000, in Hamburg, Germany, he successfully completed the European Certificate for administration of antitumor treatment, equivalent to certification in the field of Medical Oncology in Western Europe. Since 2002, he held the position of national representative for the Slovak Republic in the European Oncology Society for the Young Medical Oncolgists category. Since 2004, he has been working as a member of the Working Group for Education of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), based in Switzerland, and annually participates in the preparation of tests for the European Certificate in the field of Medical Oncology. He has been a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) since 2002.
He completed short-term professional internships at several important world oncology workplaces connected with teaching (University of Texas-M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, University of Nottingham, Unit of Breast Medical Oncology, Universite Libre, Medical Oncology in Brussels and others). In 2007, at the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University in Bratislava, he received a PhD degree in Clinical Oncology in the field of metastatic lung cancer. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the specialist journal Oncology, which serves as the main source of scientific information for oncologists in Slovakia. During his practice, he published several professional articles in journals (Oncology, Acta Chemotherapeutica, Internal Medicine and others). He regularly actively participates with lectures at national professional events. He was the main clinical investigator of several international Phase III randomized clinical trials. In 2014, he was elected to the Committee of the Slovak Oncology Society. In 2007, he chaired a symposium on advanced kidney cancer for young European oncologists in Lugano, Switzerland. In 2015, he professionally participated at the University of Oxford, UK, in the preparation of European doctors for the Certificate in Medical Oncology. In 2022, he led the section on Lung Cancer, which serves as a preparation for the Certificate in Medical Oncology for European doctors at the ESMO Academy at Trinity College, Dublin. Since 2022, he has been the Scientific Secretary of the Slovak Oncology Society.
He currently works as a consultant for Clinical Oncology at the Košice-Šaca Hospital. He deals with the treatment of solid tumors and malignant lymphomas (especially breast, colon, lung, urogenital, gynecological and other cancers). He is not a specialist and does not provide consultations in the field of radiotherapy (irradiation of malignant tumors).
